Breakthrough Strategies for Multicultural Communications

As the U.S. Latino and Hispanic population continues to boom, it's critical that we find effective ways to communicate. In Boston, Latino and Hispanic is the fastest growing population and nationally it will be the largest population by 2010. Communicating with this rapidly growing demographic is about more than simply translating messages or materials to Spanish or targeting Spanish-based media. It is critical for communicators to understand that other factors such as culture, religion, heritage, and family beliefs weigh heavily in the decision making process. If you are promoting any product or service in the United States, you can’t afford to miss this event.

This esteemed panel of experts in the field of multicultural communication will be moderated by Diego Sanchez, APR, director of PR and external affairs, AIDS Action Committee, Boston. Panelists to include:
Jaime Crespo, multicultural communications manager, Children's Hospital Susie Potter, partner, Potter Ruiz Advertising Raquel Ortiz, Raquel Ortiz Productions Eduardo Crespo, president, Hispanic Market Solutions Raul Medina, marketing director, HNP Media (owner of El Planeta)

Overcoming Math Anxiety: Practical Business Math for Public Relations Professionals

It’s OK if you never learned, or cannot remember, all the math you were taught in high school and college. But, you have come to realize now that economics, accounting, statistics, and other “numbers” courses are exactly what you need to know for your day-to-day life in PR. Why?

  • Your employers expect you to know it.
  • You need it in order to advance.
  • You may need to teach your employees.
  • You have an obligation to know it.

During this workshop, we will start with basics, cover some core accounting principles, and delve into some of the more advanced and relevant business math for communications professionals.

We’ll provide sample financial reports and explain how to read them, what they mean and how to tell if a company is profitable.

  • Balance sheets
  • Income and expense statements
  • Statement of cash flows
  • Reading an annual report – what is most important?
  • Depreciation, overhead, inventory
  • Payables, receivables, share price, EPS

You have heard about the following before. Come and learn why they are important to your profession:

  • commissions and mark-ups
  • profit margins
  • income vs. revenue
  • assets and liabilities
  • GAAP
  • Sarbanes-Oxley
  • Securities and Exchange Commission.
  • Other common financial terms and regulatory organizations

In addition to the session, you’ll receive a workbook filled with materials to follow along during the class and, more importantly, for future reference. We’ll include excellent guides – hard copies and online -- to help you get answers when you need help.

It’s better to learn from the professional and ask questions rather than try to wing your way through your next financial quandary. Spend a couple of hours with the Pub Club. It will be an investment you will appreciate for life.

Riding the High-Tech Roller Coaster

How to Keep Up with the Ever-Changing Technology Media Landscape

Well-respected publications are closing their doors and many high-tech editors and reporters are shifting their roles. These changes coupled with the explosion of social media such as blogs have put the high-tech PR world into a frenzy. In this session, we’ll discuss what PR professionals need to know to adjust to this constantly changing industry, build strong media relationships, and garner positive coverage for their companies and clients.

Topics open for discussion include:

  • How has the various changes with high-tech publications this past year affected the industry overall?
  • What can PR professionals do to best establish new relationships with reporters changing environments and roles?
  • Will traditional PR strategies and tactics such as embargoes and exclusives be obsolete?
  • With smaller staffs and shrinking publications, how can smaller technology companies get attention?
  • How is social media helping/hindering the high-tech media environment?

Buzz Word "New Media" - What Does it Really Mean?

Learn How New Media Has Changed the Way We Get, Create and Share Information

More often than not, when a room full of PR practitioners turns its attention to “new media” the discussion focuses on what new media is, how you work it into campaigns, and how you measure its impact. Rather than focusing on the “block and tackle” elements of new media public relations, the goal of this discussion is to bring together industry experts and academics who will provide an overview of key issues and trends. There’s no clear-cut formula of how to incorporate “new media” into PR strategy—this session is designed to get PR practitioners thinking about how the industry is evolving and impacts the work we do on a daily basis.
